The Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti, chaired the 11th meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Council on Waters, which was also attended by the Minister of Economy and Environment, Blerim Kuçi, the Minister of Finance, Hykmete Bajrami, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, Besian Mustafa, Deputy Minister of Health, Pjetër Ndou, as well as the Ambassador of Switzerland, Thomas Kolly and the Ambassador of Germany in Kosovo, Joern Rohde.
Prime Minister Hoti first thanked the donor countries, especially Switzerland and Germany, which have helped the development of the water sector in our country, on which occasion he stressed the maximum commitment of the Government to the water sector, as a very important sector.
Further, in this meeting was approved the recommendation of the Feasibility Study for the construction of the Lepenc canal and dams in Firajë and Shtime in two phases, on the basis of which will be applied in the next round of the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) for the preliminary design, environmental and social impact assessment, as well as the preparation of the tender dossier of this project, through which drinking water will be provided for the region of Gjilan, Ferizaj and Prishtina.
Then, the Investment Framework – Irrigation Master Plan was approved as an important strategic project which will have a major impact on the agricultural sector, through which the irrigation coverage of agricultural lands will be increased.
Among other things, the approach for setting targets and performance indicators for Regional Water Companies and Regional Irrigation Companies was considered, in order to improve the corporate governance of these enterprises.
Also, the current state of projects in the water sector was discussed, for which a more detailed analysis was requested, as well as the recommendations regarding the Report on International Debt Financing for Investment in Water Infrastructure of Kosovo – Legal and Economic Aspect”.
In the framework of the discussion was also the review of the implementation of the provisions of the law on waters, where the Council decided to request from the responsible institutions a report on the implementation of the law.
